(after) Salvador Dali Chairs

Spanish, 1904-1989
Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989) was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship and the striking and bizarre images in his work. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Dali received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid. Influenced by Impressionism and the Renaissance masters from a young age, he became increasingly attracted to Cubism and avant-garde movements. He moved closer to Surrealism in the late 1920s and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August 1931, and is one of the most famous Surrealist paintings. Dali lived in France throughout the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) before leaving for the United States in 1940 where he achieved commercial success. He returned to Spain in 1948 where he developed his "nuclear mysticism" style, based on his interest in classicism, mysticism and recent scientific developments. Dali's artistic repertoire included painting, graphic arts, film, sculpture, design and photography, at times in collaboration with other artists. He also wrote fiction, poetry, autobiography, essays and criticism. Major themes in his work include dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science and his closest personal relationships. Some trends in Dali's work that would continue throughout his life were already evident in the 1920s. Dali was influenced by many styles of art, ranging from the most academically classic, to the most cutting-edge avant-garde. His classical influences included Raphael, Bronzino, Francisco de Zurbaran, Vermeer and Velazquez. Exhibitions of his works attracted much attention and a mixture of praise and puzzled debate from critic

A study in proportion, softness, and structural grace. The Wing Collection is born from the pursuit of equilibrium, balancing structure and lightness, geometry and comfort, precision and sensuality. Inspired by the aerodynamic lines of the B-52 aircraft, Wing translates the logic of flight into furniture that feels simultaneously grounded and suspended. Subtle transitions, sculpted volumes, and resilient wood sections create a rhythm that is architectural yet fluid. Every element is guided by the golden section, ensuring that each profile and inclination exists in perfect proportion to the whole. Crafted in solid wood, Wing reveals natural variations in grain, making every piece unique. Despite its sculptural presence, it remains warm and intimately functional, inviting daily use through the softness of curve, the precision of joinery, and the balance of proportion. Wing is a breeze, a presence felt, not imposed. A collection designed to inhabit life gracefully, every day. Without armrests, the geometry becomes more pronounced, emphasizing verticality and rhythm. The profile is slender, architectural, and disciplined, bringing clarity to dining spaces and fluidity to interiors. Drawn according to the golden section, the chair balances material and motion in perfect proportion. Its solid wood backrest is sculpted for comfort while maintaining a precise silhouette. Every joint and transition is refined into harmony, making the chair both minimal and emotionally present. This is not reduction, but refinement. Light in footprint, rich in intention, the Wing Chair...

Sunlounger by Salvador Dali model "Portlligat" Surrealist Design Iroko Wood

By Salvador Dalí

Located in Barcelona, ES

Dalí’s creativity and fascination with the human body takes the form of a sunbed, intimately created and exquisitely designed. Dalí’s original Portlligat was made in 1962 from olive tree wood for him and his wife Gala’s home in Costa Brava, Spain. This reproduction is available in Iroko wood which is resistant to changes in heat and moisture content, and optional upholstery for outdoor use. It resembles a body: it has a head, torso, ribs, arms, hands, legs and feet. The visible grain and unified structure present a strong and meaningfully arranged, figurative piece. Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, in 1904. He began drawing when he was 12 and was formally educated in fine arts at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid. He experimented with Cubism, was attracted to Dada and Futurism, and was influenced by the great masters of the Renaissance. In 1929, he joined the Surrealist movement and became its most successful proponent. His work shocked and excited society. Diverse things were merged into an explicit rawness, one with unusual meanings that, when combined, made irreality concrete. In the Paris of the 1930s, Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends working in varied disciplines beyond the study of purely pictorial art. He collaborated with designers like JeanMichel Frank to...

Meltdown Chair, PE Pink by Tom Price, Contemporary, Limited Edition

By Tom Price

Located in PARIS, FR

'Meltdown Chair, PE Pink' is a piece by English artist Tom Price, from the Meltdown Series. This chair is made entirely from polyethylene sheets, no other material is added. The artist creates a knotted mass of pink polyethylene sheeting and then he presses it on a heated metal seat-shaper former. The sheets melt and, when they cool and subsequently harden, the shape of the seat is created, while the remaining plastic is heated and sculpted into solid twisting forms. Tom Price thus alters the structural and aesthetic qualities of the plastic material, giving rise to interesting contrasts in texture and form within the same object. Launched in 2007, the Meltdown Series earned Tom Price widespread international acclaim for his innovative production processes and eye-catching approach to working with commonplace plastic products. The way of assembling the plastic material and the mostly unpredictable patterns created by the heating method ensure that every piece is unique and unrepeatable. This design pieces are true sculptural objects, while at the same time being fully functional and very robust. Meltdown Chairs are included in the permanent collections of several Museums, including SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (US), the Denver Art Museum (US), The Nelson Atkins Museum (US), Chatsworth House (UK), MKG Hamburg (Germany) and the Amore Pacific Museum (South Korea). Works from the Meltdown Series have been exhibited extensively throughout the USA, South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. They have been included in many high-profile museum exhibitions, including SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (US), MAD Museum of Art and Design New York (US); The Mint Museum (US); Denver Art Museum (US); Design Museum Holon (Israel); Design Museum Gent (Belgium); NRW Forum Dusseldorf (Germany); The Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga (Latvia). They have also featured at international art and design fairs, including Design Miami Basel (Switzerland); Sao Paolo Design Festival (Brazil); Cheongju International Craft Biennale (South Korea), Design Days Dubai (United Arab Emirates); Gwangju Biennale (South Korea) and Lodz International Design Biennale (Poland). Finally, the series has been featured in multiple publications, including: The Campaign for Art...

What is unique about Salvador Dalí art is its dreamlike imagery, drawn from the depths of the unconscious. He used hyperrealism to convey Surrealist symbols and concepts that subvert accepted notions of reality. You can see this clearly reflected in what is perhaps his most recognizable painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), in which he depicts the fluidity of time through melting clocks, their forms inspired by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. Although the scene is one of fantasy, Dalí rendered each object in a manner that makes the elements look as lifelike and realistic as possible rather than abstracting their forms. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of Salvador Dalí art.
