Antique Italian wooden yarn winder / wool skein reel, dating from the 18th century, acquired from an antique dealer in Cortina d’Ampezzo and part of the A&MYART Collections since 1999.
This rare textile tool was traditionally used to wind wool or yarn into skeins. The structure consists of a finely crafted wooden frame with rotating crossbars, turned supports, shaped feet, and a side-mounted handle mechanism, which enables the circular motion needed to wind the skein of wool around the four outer rods.
Beyond its original functional purpose, the piece is now a highly decorative and sculptural object. Its articulated geometry, warm, weathered wood surface, and visible mechanical construction give it a strong architectural presence. This piece captures the charm of traditional Alpine and Italian craftsmanship, reflecting the domestic textile culture of the 18th century, when wool preparation and hand spinning were essential activities in both rural and noble households.
The wood has an attractive aged patina, with warm brown tones, signs of use, minor wear, old restorations, and natural irregularities consistent with its age and function. These elements enhance its authenticity and historical character.
A particularly evocative object for collectors of antique textile tools...
