Frans Francken II Art

Flemish, 1581-1642
Frans Francken the Younger is the best-known member of an extended artistic family that worked in Antwerp from the late sixteenth to the late seventeenth century. Born in 1581, he almost certainly studied with his father, Frans Francken the Elder (c. 1542-1616), before becoming a master in the Antwerp Saint Luke's Guild in 1605. In 1627 he became a member of the Antwerp archers' guild De Oude Handboog. Francken was an extremely productive and imaginative artist who specialized in expressively rendered small-scale religious and mythological scenes. He also painted larger altarpieces for Catholic churches. His depictions of collectors' cabinets introduced a genre of painting that influenced several artists, including Jan Brueghel the Elder and David Teniers the Younger. Francken ran a large and productive workshop, where he was assisted by a number of pupils, including his sons Frans III (1607-1667), Hieronymus III (1611-after 1661), and Ambrosius III (c. 1614-1662). Also active in his studio were his brothers Thomas (1574-c. 1626), Hieronymus the Younger (1578-1623), and Ambrosius the Younger (c. 1590-1632). Francken painted many works for the art dealer Christian van Immerzeel, who sold them to Spanish collectors. Francken frequently collaborated with other artists. For example, he painted figures in landscapes by Abraham Govaerts (1589-1626) and Joos de Momper II (1564-1635) and in architectural scenes by Bartholomeus van Bassen (c. 1560-1652) and Peeter Neeffs the Elder. He also collaborated with flower painters, among them Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678), and Andries Danielsz (active c. 1600-1625).

We would like to thank Dr. Ursula Härting who, after examining the work, confirmed the autograph nature of this painting by Frans Francken the Younger in a certificate issued on December 9, 2024. In this previously unpublished painting coming from a French private collection, Frans Francken the Younger tackles one of his favorite themes: the adoration of the Magi, the wise men who come from the East to adore the infant Jesus in Bethlehem, Judea. This theme was often taken up by the artist, but this version, which can be dated around 1610, is one of the earliest interpretations. 1. 18th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait, Major Alexander Brown in Military Uniform.

By Sir David Wilkie

Located in Cotignac, FR

18th Century Military portrait of a young officer in Napoleonic period military dress. The painting is not signed but the subject is Major Alexander Brown. The work is oil on canvas later mounted on board and presented in a fine 'Regence style' carved gilt frame. There are labels to the back referring to the subject, 'Major Brown of Trinity' and a framers trade label from Edinburgh. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a young military officer in the prime of his life. His red uniform adorned with fine buttons, fringed epaulettes and high gilt collar. His ruddy complexion offset by his stylish hair, a quiff and swept forward to the sides as was the fashion at the time. Sir David Wilkie RA (18 November 1785 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish painter, especially known for his portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. Sir David Wilkie was actually admitted in 1799 (despite only being 14) through the influence of the Earl of Leven...

Workshop Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581 - 1642) Adoration of the Magi School of Antwerp in the second half of the sixteenth century oil on panel, parquet floor Dimensions (cm): 48 x 63, with frame (from the 19th century) 61 x 76 The proposed painting represents the scene of Adoration of the Magi, a favorite theme of ancient painting. Considerable importance is attributed to the figures of the three wise men, sumptuously dressed; the richness of their clothes contrasts with the humility of the Holy Family, on the right, and the other characters who watch the scene with curiosity. The representation is based on a traditional iconography, where the wise kings symbolize, with the gift brought to Jesus, the three parts of the world known at the time: Africa, Asia and Europe. Melchior, the eldest, is kneeling in adoration of the child, offering him gold, in recognition of his kingship; Gasparre, wearing a turban crown, offers incense, a sign of the divinity of Jesus, while Baltassarre, the black king, offers myrrh, symbol of his sacrifice for our salvation. Of obvious Flemish origin, the work is part of the production of the Antwerp School at the end of the 16th century; in particular, it is due to the prolific workshop Francken, the famous family of painters from Antwerp who played a predominant role in local art for four generations. In particular, the characters of style and composition bring the paternity of a painter close to Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581-1642), with some points of contact with his son, Frans Francken III...
