George Gallo Art

American, b. 1956

George Gallo was born in Port Chester, New York in 1956. He began painting at an early age and was especially attracted to landscapes as a way to express himself. He studied landscape painting with internationally renowned artist George Cherepov (1909-1987) in Connecticut for three years. After reaching widespread acclaim, Gallo taught landscape painting four years in a row for American Artist’s Weekend with the Masters.

Besides being a passionate landscape painter, Gallo is also a noted screenwriter and film director. His movies include Midnight Run, Bad Boys, 29th Street, and Middle Men. In 2006 Gallo wrote and directed the film, Local Color, a semi-autobiographical story of his early years as a representational artist in New York and Pennsylvania striving to fit into the contemporary art scene.

Fleecydale Road in Winter

By George Gallo

Located in Fredericksburg, VA

Signed lower left, *Fleecydale Road in Winter* is a captivating example of George Gallo's mastery of contemporary American Impressionism. A quiet country road winds through a snow-covered landscape as brilliant winter light spills across the scene, illuminating the trees and cottages beyond. Rather than portraying winter as subdued, Gallo fills the composition with vibrant violets, warm oranges, and luminous blues, demonstrating his remarkable ability to capture the ever-changing effects of natural light. His confident brushwork and expressive palette create a landscape that feels both immediate and immersive. Though widely recognized for his distinguished career as an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director, Gallo has devoted decades to painting, studying under renowned Impressionist artists while developing a style uniquely his own. His work reflects the traditions of American Impressionism while embracing a bold, expressive approach that emphasizes atmosphere and emotion over strict realism. Meyer Fine Art...

April, Connecticut River

By George Gallo

Located in Fredericksburg, VA

April, Connecticut River captures the quiet transition from winter into spring, when the landscape begins to awaken with color, light, and renewed energy. Signed lower right, George Gallo masterfully balances cool reflections of the river with warm bursts of emerging foliage, creating a composition that feels both peaceful and full of anticipation. Delicate pinks, fresh greens, brilliant blues, and glowing golds dance across the surface of the water, while expressive brushwork gives the scene a remarkable sense of movement and atmosphere. Rather than documenting the landscape exactly as it appears, Gallo captures the fleeting experience of standing beside the Connecticut River on a bright April morning as the season begins to change. Internationally celebrated for his acclaimed career as an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director, George Gallo has also established himself as one of today's most accomplished plein air painters. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the traditions of American Impressionism while embracing a bold, contemporary approach to color, light, and composition. Meyer Fine Art...

Located in New York, NY

Hayley Lever (1876 - 1958) Concarneau, Brittany, France, 1905 Oil on panel 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches Signed by the artist lower left Inscribed by another hand on the reverse Provenance: Clayton-Liberatore Galleries, Bridgehampton, New York Hayley Lever’s (1875-1958) versatility has worked against his posthumous reputation. He was never associated with a single artistic movement, instead producing impressionist, post-impressionist, and expressionist works. While best known as a painter of post-impressionist marine scenes, his subject matter included landscapes, urban scenes, and still lifes across his 60-year career. This lack of a singular style or subject has given him an amorphous place in U.S. art history despite his obvious accomplishments. [Richard] Hayley Lever was born in Bowden, South Australia in 1875. He excelled in painting classes at Prince Alfred College (1883-91) and Norwood Art School (1891-93) in Adelaide. In the 1890s, Lever moved to England, studying art in London and painting at St. Ives, a fishing port and popular artistic colony on the Cornish coast. In St. Ives, Lever shared a studio with Frederick Waugh, and studied painting with Albert Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage. Lever was a plein air painter particularly interested in the effect of sunlight on the sea. He painted in a distinctive style, strongly influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh, that might now be called post-impressionism. He used a limited palette to paint the St. Ives harbor, particularly at dusk or in the moonlight. His strong contrasting colors and thick use of paint created a crisp and physical surface that earned him acclaim in Europe. Lever’s many St. Ives seascapes are among his most popular works. In 2017, his painting entitled “The Old Lighthouse and Fleets of St. Ives” sold at auction for $162,500. In 1912, Lever moved to New York to test the art market in the United States. In Manhattan, Lever met prominent U.S. painters such as Ernest Lawson, Robert Henri, William Glackens, John Sloan, and George Bellows. Lever exhibited with this group regularly in New York City, painting parks, streets, bridges and the Manhattan waterfront. However, he soon discovered the scenic potential of Gloucester, Rockport, and Marblehead in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts...

Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career that lasted 17-years. Beginning in 1992, she studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike...
