19th Century. Cesare Beccaria Bronze, 49 x 13 x 15 cm The bronze statue examined faithfully reproduces the famous Milanese monument by Giuseppe Grandi (1843-1894) dedicated to Cesare Beccaria. The work, from the top of a high base in white Montorfano granite, dominates the homonymous Milanese square, a sad stage for executions at the time of Austrian rule, in a bronze copy of 1914 to replace the original stone statue which already at the beginning of the new century showed serious signs of deterioration. The marble became part of the collections of the Gallery of Modern Art and is now located inside the Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan. The initiative regarding the erection of a monument dedicated to Cesare Beccaria originates in 1865, in support of the proposed abolition of the death penalty...

Antique patinated bronze sculpture of a father and son embracing by Henri Plé

This beautiful antique French sculpture depicts a tender moment between father and son. Made of fine patinated bronze, the full length figures of father and son are crafted in the naturalistic style that is typical of Plé's work. The father is dressed in furs and leans to embrace his son in an emotional and touching manner, before he heads to battle. The two figures are set on a naturalistic square plinth, which is signed 'Henri Ple...

Large 19th Century Classical Bronze statue of Amalthea

Located in Brighton, Sussex

A very good quality large 19th century bronze statue of a semi nude female of Amalthea in Marie Antoinette’s dairy. The original is marble from 1787.. There were different traditions regarding Amaltheia.[3] Amaltheia is sometimes represented as the goat who nurtured the infant-god in a cave in Cretan Mount Aigaion ("Goat Mountain"),[4] sometimes as a goat-tending nymph[5] of uncertain parentage (the daughter of Oceanus,[6] Helios,[7] Haemonius,[8] or—according to Lactantius—Melisseus[9]).[10] The possession of multiple and uncertain mythological parents indicates wide worship of a deity in many cultures having varying local traditions. Other names, like Adrasteia, Ide, the nymph of Mount Ida...
