This magnificent tapestry was woven in Flanders during the middle of the European Renaissance, in the late 1500s. At this time, Flanders was creating some of the best textiles in the world, and many of the rich wooded scenes with animals and hunting motifs began to appear. Tapestries subjects were thick forests and park lands, hunting scenes filled with deer, birds, exotic animals, and even mythological creatures. Handwoven Wool Rug / Kilim, Grey & Jewel Tone, Natural Dye, by Andrew Boos

By Andrew Boos

Located in Brooklyn, NY

This rug is a one of a kind heirloom piece. Inspired by light and movement, the asymmetrical design is meant to enhance the flow of any space. With references to both Art Deco and contemporary design elements, this piece will stand out as an addition to any interior space. Andrew Boos seeks to redefine what a rug is. His work is not meant to be the static anchor of a room, rather it is a new architectural element. As usable art, his rugs encourage the flow of movement through a space. They redirect the focus from 2d static wall decorations to an element that creates an immersive environment. His rugs become a focal point, and invite you to enter and experience the space in a way that traditional rugs cannot. The entire process of creating this rug was done in the artist's Brooklyn studio. From dying the yarn, to weaving and finishing the piece. No part of the process is outsourced. Each work produced by the artist is a bespoke heirloom piece. The rug is woven with traditional Kilim techniques, using interlocking yarn to add strength and stability and is strong enough to withstand daily traffic. As a handmade piece this rug may include minor imperfections and variations, representing the true nature of the natural materials and techniques. The back of the rug has been finished so the piece may be reversed. Each color included in this rug was hand-dyed by the artist using natural dyes to achieve the subtle variety in tones. The greys were created using logwood, tannin and iron. The plum and magenta shades of purple were created with cochineal, a small insect native to Mexico. Cochineal has been an integral part of many traditional fiber arts...

Bargello Flamestitch Silk Embroidery Florence Spetchley Park Bed Curtains Pair

Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK

Spetchley park, Bargello, silk, bed curtains adapted into wall hangings in the 19th century • The use of silk, patterning and size suggests that these striking Bargello hangings were almost certainly conceived as bed curtains. In the Green Chamber at Parham House the State Bed is hung with Bargello curtains, pelmets and valences c1620. Like the Parham bed curtains, the Spetchley Park bed curtains have two horizontal pattern repeats in each drop. Needless to say, surviving bed curtains from this period are exceptionally rare as they had value as hangings and for upholstering domestic objects when removed from the bed. • The Spetchley Park bed curtains are really beautiful and luxurious. They were made as elite objects and have not lost their gravitas or their character and charm. • The Spetchley Park bed curtains were adapted into wall hangings in the 19th century. They are versatile and could easily be reinstated as curtains or panels within larger curtains. • Bargello work has a classic timeless quality to it and blends with most decorative schemes whether period or contemporary Each panel is made from two sections of bargello. The step (pattern) comprising two rows of short vertical stitches over two threads of graduating numbers of stitches up and down with two rows of long vertical stiches over six threads of graduating numbers of stitches up and down. Worked in graduating shades of blue, green, brown, red, tan and ivory silks on a hessian ground. The four edges of each hanging are faced with a 19th century, dusky pink fan...
