Piero Fornasetti Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

Italian, 1913-1988

The Italian artist and designer Piero Fornasetti was one of the wittiest and most imaginative talents of the 20th century. He crafted an inimitable decorative style from a personal vocabulary of images that included birds, butterflies, hot-air balloons, architecture and — most frequently, and in some 500 variations — an enigmatic woman’s face based on that of Cavalieri. Fornasetti used transfer prints of these images, rendered in the style of engravings, to decorate an endless variety of furnishings and housewares that ranged from chairs, tables and decorative objects to dinner plates, table lamps and umbrella stands. His work is archly clever, often Surrealist and always fun.

Fornasetti was born in Milan, the son of an accountant, and he lived his entire life in the city. He showed artistic talent as a child and enrolled at Milan’s Brera Academy of Fine Art in 1930, but was expelled after two years for consistently failing to follow his professors’ orders.

A group of Fornasetti's hand-painted silk scarves, displayed in the 1933 Triennale di Milano, caught the eye of the architect and designer Gio Ponti, who, in the 1940s, became the artist's collaborator and patron. Beginning in the early 1950s, they created a striking series of desks, bureaus and secretaries that pair Ponti’s signature angular forms with Fornasetti’s decorative motifs — lighthearted arrangements of flowers and birds on some pieces, austere architectural imagery on others. The two worked together on numerous commissions for interiors, though their greatest project has been lost: the first-class lounges and restaurants of the luxury ocean liner Andrea Doria, which sank in 1956.

Fornasetti furnishings occupy an unusual and compelling niche in the decorative arts: they are odd yet pack a serious punch. They act, essentially, as functional sculpture. A large Fornasetti piece such as a cabinet or a desk can change the character of an entire room; his smaller works have the aesthetic power of a vase of flowers, providing a bright and alluring decorative note. The chimerical, fish-nor-fowl nature of Fornasetti’s work may be its greatest strength. It stands on its own. Bringing the Fornasetti look into the future is Barnaba Fornasetti, who took the reins of the company after his father's death.

Piero Fornasetti Porcelain Plate, Tema e Variazioni No. 224, Lina Cavalieri 1980s This Piero Fornasetti porcelain plate from the Tema e Variazioni series presents the face of the Italian opera singer Lina Cavalieri fragmented and repeated across the well in a dense field of overlapping crescents, so that only the eyes and brows of each impression remain visible. The lithographic transfer is printed in black and gray on a white ground, and the scale-like repetition reads at a distance as an abstract pattern before resolving into dozens of watching eyes. Numbered 224 in the series, it is among the more unusual and graphically inventive of the Tema e Variazioni designs, and it demonstrates the Surrealist wit and optical play that defined Fornasetti’s approach to the decorative arts. Dimensions Diameter: 10 inches (25.4 cm) Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm) Marks Printed to the reverse with the Fornasetti eye...

This porcelain plate is number 89 in Piero Fornasetti’s Tema e Variazioni, the series he built across his career from a single borrowed face, that of the opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Here the face is shown half-immersed. Only the brow and the eyes rise above the surface of a still lake, the lower part of the face lying below the waterline, and the eyes appear a second time in the water as a soft reflection, so that four eyes look out of the plate at once. A stand of rushes crosses the foreground at the lower edge. The image is printed in black by lithographic transfer on a white ground, the whole worked in the fine engraved hatching and stipple that Fornasetti used throughout the series, with the horizontal ripple of the water set against the dotted modeling of the face. The device is characteristically economical: a single unbroken horizontal line converts a portrait into a landscape, and the viewer supplies the rest. Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) found the face in a nineteenth-century French illustrated magazine and was held by it for the rest of his working life. He was drawn not to Cavalieri’s celebrity but to the formal character of the image, a face he described as archetypal, as classic as a Greek statue and as enigmatic as the Gioconda, and therefore able to carry any idea he brought to it. He produced more than three hundred and fifty variations under the title Tema e Variazioni, almost all of them on plates, and the series has been continued since his death by his son Barnaba under the Atelier Fornasetti name. Patrick Mauriès observes that for Fornasetti a single product never exhausted the possibilities of an idea, and that much of his work therefore takes the form of variations on a theme; among the recurring subjects he lists the sun, playing cards, the harlequin, and hands, but above all this face, which appears through the series as a moon, a flower, a lake, a mask, a mosaic, a clock, and a single disembodied eye. The present plate is the lake. The porcelain blanks were bought in and decorated at the Milan studio, and the green Arzberg mark beneath the black Fornasetti stamp records the German factory that supplied this one. Hung on its own or grouped with other plates from the series, it holds a wall far beyond its size. Dimensions Diameter: 10 inches (25.4 cm) Marks Printed to the reverse with the Fornasetti eye...

Piero Fornasetti Rosenthal Porcelain Themes & Variations Plate, Sun Face, #18

By Piero Fornasetti

Located in Downingtown, PA

A striking porcelain plate from the celebrated "Themes & Variations" (Tema e Variazioni) series designed by Piero Fornasetti and produced by Rosenthal, Germany, in the 1980s — Motiv 18, among the most poetic images of the series, in which the face of Lina Cavalieri becomes the sun itself, gazing serenely from a rayed solar disc as it breaks through banks of finely engraved clouds. The black-and-white transfer print is executed with precision on Rosenthal's fine porcelain blank and finished with a gilt rim. The plate retains its original black presentation box with silver sunburst and gilt Rosenthal/Fornasetti marks. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection. The plate comes from the holdings of the legendary style icon (1921–2024), whose maximalist eye made Fornasetti a natural fixture of her world — a provenance that suits few designers better. Cavalieri, an operatic soprano, was Fornasetti's eternal muse; he discovered her face in a 19th-century French magazine and returned to it throughout his career. As he famously put it: "What inspired me to create more than 500 variations on the face of a woman? I don't know. I began to make them and I never stopped." Rosenthal's small 1980s range of these designs — sometimes called Julia plates...

Piero Fornasetti is famous for his work as a designer. The Italian artist was one of the wittiest and most imaginative talents of the 20th century. Fornasetti crafted an inimitable decorative style from a personal vocabulary of images that included birds, butterflies, hot-air balloons, architecture and — most frequently, and in some 500 variations — an enigmatic woman's face based on that of opera singer Lina Cavalieri. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Piero Fornasetti pieces.
