A Fine Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze and Moulded-Glass Twenty-Four Light Chandelier by La Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat. Moulded 'Baccarat' signature to the drip trays. The chandelier has a circular corona mounted with Acanthus and hung with drops and swags above a circular cage frame issuing tiers of scrolling acanthus wrapped candle branches with glass drip-pans and circular nozzles, interspersed by finely cast putti figures. The chandelier is hung overall with faceted drops and terminals. The twenty-four light model, like the present example is illustrated in Baccarat's 'Tarif des Articles d'Eclairage', from the turn of the century, as 'Lustre Série E.193'. A Pair of Regency Style Gilt and Patinated Bronze Floor Lamps or 'Torchères', After The Models By James Smethurst of New Bond Street. Each with central lidded urn above three fluted branches with tulip-shaped glass shades supported by three pelicans, the stands with rams’ head masks above monopodia supports on paw feet, England, 20th Century. This model of lamp, without pedestal, was invented by the Regency lamp-manufacturer James Smethurst of New Bond Street, whose registered mark of post-1814 has been recorded on period examples. A set of four lamps of identical pattern - although not apparently signed - is in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. These were originally supplied for the Saloon of Devonshire House, London, where they are recorded in Henry Hunt's watercolour of 1817. Two were exhibited in 'Country House Lighting...

A Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze six-light chandelier 'aux Termes' Attributed to Emmanuel-Alfred (dit Alfred II) Beurdeley, Paris. Modelled with three caryatid term figures holding spiral branches issuing candle nozzles. The whole executed in exceptionally finely cast gilt-bronze with beautiful matte and burnished gilding. The bowl in blue-painted tole. The prototype for this chandelier dates to the end of the eighteenth century, is attributed to the bronzier François Rémond and is in the Nissim de Camondo museum in Paris (Inv. CAM 146). Another, dated to circa 1785, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1972.242). This example is attributed to the celebrated ébéniste and bronzier Maison Beurdeley, owing to the fine quality of the gilt-bronze and in relation to a drawing for the model which is held in the Beurdeley archives in the library of the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris. This magnificent chandelier relates to examples in the collection at Chatsworth House which were acquired by the 6th Duke of Devonshire for his London residence Devonshire House in the 1840s, notably for the Green Drawing Room and grand Salon.
