Natan Heber was trained by his father in Poland to be a ritual slaughterer. In 1925, he joined the Zionist movement "Mizrachi" and in 1936 immigrated to Palestine where he opened a poultry shop in Haifa. He began to paint at the age of sixty-one, after ill health forced him to retire. Driven by a need to memorialize his family and their shtetl community lost in the Holocaust, he drew scenes of traditional Jewish life. Unfamiliar with the conventions of scale and perspective, he set his heavily outlined frontal figures on steeply rising surfaces and often portrayed his father in monumental size to mark his importance. Old Testament themes such as Jacob's Ladder and Noah’s Ark, and the Jewish mystical beliefs of the Kabbalah, are recurring themes in Milder’s paintings which are presented as archetypal images that recur in the basic karma, make-up and need of human nature. Internationally exhibited, Milder is included in the collections of many national and international museums. He has been the subject of two, recent retrospectives in Brazil in 2007 at the National Museum Brasilia and, in 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro. He is renowned in Sao Paulo, one of the major international centers for street and public art, as a seminal influence on graffiti artists. Jay Milder was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1934. His grandparents, who came from the Ukraine, were descendants of the Hasidic mystic, Rabbi Nachman. As he listened to family stories his interest in spiritualism and mysticism increased, and became an important influence on his philosophy of life and art. Later, when he arrived in New York, he was drawn to the Theosophical Society and the teaching of Helena Blavatsky. In 1954 Milder visited Europe where he studied painting with André L’Hote, and sculpture with Ossip Zadkine. He spent much time studying at the Louvre Museum, and at the studio of Stanley Hayter. During his Paris years the paintings of the Jewish painter Chaim Soutine, primarily influenced him. Milder returned to the United States in 1956, and he began studying painting at the Chicago Art Institute. He exhibited with the Momentum Group, an alliance of artists who were particularly dedicated to the progression of figurative art and its global origins. In 1957, Milder spent the summer in Mexico for a summer where he exhibited in Puebla. That year he received the Mexican Government’s Honor Award for artists. In the summer of 1958, Milder studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He exhibited his work at the Sun Gallery, with his contemporaries, including Mary Frank, Red Grooms, Bob Thompson, Lester Johnson, Emilio Cruz and Alex Katz, among others. During this period his painting began to incorporate iconography of birds, animals, humans and animal/human hybrids. In 1958, Milder, Bob Thompson and Red Grooms, founded the City Gallery in the Chelsea section of New York City. The gallery moved downtown and became the Delancey Street Museum and an early site for ‘Happenings’,which Milder participated in. He showed his first major series called Subway Runners in 1960 at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York City. Milder began a group of smaller paintings, entitled “Messiah Series”, in the late 1960s. These were fully expressionistic earth toned pictures, and he completed around 250 paintings in the series, based on biblical themes from the Old Testament. When 40 of these paintings were shown in a traveling exhibition premiering at the Richard Green Gallery in New York City, in 1987, art critic Donald Kuspit wrote in ArtForum Magazine: “after Nolde’s biblical pictures, these are the best and most integral group of biblical pictures in the 20th century.” During the 1970s, Milder co-founded a collective group called Rhino Horn with Peter Passuntino, Peter Dean, Benny Andrews, Nicholas Sperakis, Michael Fauerbach, Ken Bowman, Leonel Gongora, and Bill Barrell. Rhino Horn continued a style promoting politically and socially driven American Figurative Expressionism, when many people in the art world and society were focused on Pop Art and Minimalism. From the 1970s to today, much of Milder's artworks have been centered around interpretations and the visual energy of the Kabbalah. Milder's art has been the subject of two retrospectives in Brazil in 2007 at the National Museum Brasilia and, in 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro. In Summer of 2009 he was in Brazil where at this time he painted a commissioned mural alongside Brazilian street artist, Eduardo Kobra in Sao Paulo. Jay Milder’s paintings have undergone various stylistic changes since the 1950s. However the most common and important consistency has been his organic form of Expressionism. Biblical references have always played an important role in Milder’s work. For Milder the Kabbalah underlies all aspects of reality including not only the way a painting is conceived and executed, but also its impact on the visual environment around us. Jay Milder's work is in the permanent collection of many galleries and museums throughout the world, including The Tel-Aviv Museum of Art in Tel-Aviv, Israel, The Provincetown Art Association and Museum in Provincetown, Massachusetts, The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio. He has been awarded the Mexican Government’s Honor Award for artists in 1957, a Rainbow Arts Foundation Award at Exhibition Museum, Guadalajara, Mexico in 1965, he was honored as Professor Emeritus at City College of New York in 1991, and in 1999 he was the Cultural Exchange representative between America and Brazil at Belles Artes Museum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His breakthrough "Subway Runners" series debuted at Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1964 — dense, impasto oil paintings depicting commuters in motion through the city's transit system. Rhino Horn and Mature Style During the 1970s, Milder co-founded the Rhino Horn collective alongside Peter Passuntino, Peter Dean, Benny Andrews, and others, furthering a commitment to figurative expressionism against the prevailing tides of Minimalism and Pop Art. Throughout his career, biblical and Kabbalistic themes remained central to his practice, which art historian George Nelson Preston described as "trance-like" in a 1976 Arts magazine profile. Albert Malet French Impressionist Painter and Leader of L'École de Rouen Albert Malet (1912–1986) was a French painter of landscapes, marines, and coastal views, celebrated as one of the leading figures of L'École de Rouen (the School of Rouen), a regional Post-Impressionist movement rooted in the light-filled tradition of Norman landscape painting. Born in Bosc-le-Hard, near Rouen, Malet was deeply influenced by the work of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, but his decisive artistic inspiration came from his teacher, the celebrated Rouen painter Robert Antoine Pinchon — himself a student of the Impressionist Albert Lebourg. Malet and Pinchon developed a close friendship that endured until Pinchon's death, at which point Malet succeeded him as head of L'École de Rouen. Circle of Rouennais Painters As a central figure of the School of Rouen, Malet painted regularly alongside its other leading artists, including Narcisse Guilbert, Marcel Couchaux, Pierre Le Trividic, Narcisse Hénocque, Gaston Sébire, and Maurice Louvrier, continuing the school's dedication to atmospheric, light-driven depictions of the Normandy countryside and the Seine. His work also attracted admiration from contemporary poets, including Philippe Tournaire, Pierre Laurent, Roger Vaccaro, and Olivier Costa de Beauregard. Malet was, in turn, an influential teacher himself; his pupil Isabelle de Ganay would go on to become the modern head of L'École de Rouen, carrying the tradition Malet had inherited from Pinchon into the present day. Exhibitions and Recognition Malet exhibited widely throughout his career, showing in Rouen, Paris, Germany, Algeria, and Japan, and participating in the Salon d'Automne. He was invited by the Salon de l'École Française to exhibit at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and won a gold medal at the Salon U.F.O.L.E.A. and a bronze medal at the exhibition for Artistes Français. He held memberships in the Comité des Peintres Normands and the Société des Artistes Rouennais, was vice president of the Société des Sciences, and was named a Knight of the Palmes Académiques. Malet's paintings were shown in major galleries around the world, and the President of France presented his work on several occasions as a diplomatic gift to visiting heads of state, including U.S. President Ronald Reagan. A Renaissance Sensibility Beyond painting, Malet held wide-ranging expertise as a meteorologist, botanist, and amateur astronomer, and was knowledgeable in precious metals and prehistoric fossils — interests that informed his close, naturalist's attentiveness to light, atmosphere, and landscape. Despite his considerable achievements, Malet remained known for his modesty, consistently encouraging his students and crediting the strengths of fellow artists. Born in Richmond, Virginia, on June 30, 1944, Duesberry developed an early, formative connection to the land growing up in rural Virginia, seeking out woods, creeks, and lakes as places of solitary refuge and sketching from childhood. Though she went on to earn two advanced degrees — graduating with highest honors from Smith College in 1966, followed by an MFA from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University — Duesberry is considered a self-taught painter, developing her singular style largely outside the classroom. Mentorship Under Richard Diebenkorn The defining turning point in Duesberry's development came in 1986, when she received an Individual Painting Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with the celebrated Bay Area painter Richard Diebenkorn. Though Diebenkorn's influence on her work was conceptual rather than stylistic, Duesberry often cited him as her most significant mentor, crediting him with instilling three ideas that shaped the rest of her career: that the abstract and the real are indistinguishable in painting, that the modernist exploration of all poles of expression should be pursued without timidity, and that an artist's compositional instincts are rooted in deep, often unconscious memory. Diebenkorn also encouraged Duesberry to take up monotype printmaking, a medium she embraced with passion and continued to exhibit alongside her paintings for the rest of her career, working for many years with Denver's Open Press. It was this period of study that prompted her move from Manhattan's Bowery to Colorado in 1985. Exhibition History Duesberry began exhibiting in New York City in 1979, eventually mounting ten solo exhibitions there, and was later represented by Tatistcheff Gallery and Graham Modern in New York, as well as Broschofsky Galleries in Ketchum, Idaho, among roughly seven galleries coast to coast. Major retrospectives followed at the Denver Art Museum (Joellyn Duesberry: Three Decades of Paint, January 2006) and the Century Association in New York, as well as a fifty-year retrospective at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, accompanied by the monograph Elevated Perspective (2011). In 1997, she received the Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize from the National Academy of Design, and from 1998 to 1999 she held a World Views residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, painting from studio space in the World Trade Center's North Tower — an experience that gave her body of work a lasting connection to Ground Zero following September 11, 2001. Style and Legacy Critics and dealers alike have noted that Duesberry's contemporary canvases echo the modernist masters John Marin and Milton Avery, sharing their bold color and their instinct for finding underlying geometric structure within the observed landscape. Her plein air practice took her across the American Northeast and West, particularly Colorado and New Mexico, as well as Italy and France, and she maintained a decades-long connection to the Colorado art scene after moving to Denver in 1985.
