About the Item

An elegant and very early 1950s maxi-dress coat which I have no doubt retailed in one of the finest US department stores of the day and is very possibly a designer piece. Tailored from the most beautiful fabric - textured black jacquard dotted with metallic flowers in pink and yellow - it has a wonderfully feminine cut. A nipped-in waist and full, softly pleated skirt creates a flattering silhouette. It has a wide curved collar which gives way to double-breasted buttons carved from black plastic. The front of the coat is detailed with two welt pockets and the sleeves are finished with turn-up cuffs. The coat is lined with bright candy pink satin in the torso. The coat is in excellent vintage condition but alas has lost all its labels so please check the below measurements as the fabric has no stretch. We believe it would best fit up to size UK 10-12, US 6-8. MEASUREMENTS BUST - 42 in. (107 cm) WAIST - 32 in. (81 cm) HIP - 56 in. (142 cm) LENGTH - 55 in. (140 cm) SHOULDERS - 17 in. (43 cm)

1930s Midnight Blue Long Sleeved Floral Georgette Maxi Dress

1930s Midnight Blue Long Sleeved Floral Georgette Maxi Dress

Located in London, GB

This true vintage 1930s ankle length gown is cut to a classic tea dress style in a midnight blue, almost black georgette with striking peach, mustard and pale blue-grey florals printed across it. Full of character with lovely period details, it is detailed with a cowl neckline and sweeping ruffle. The sleeves are sheer and join to a faux-cover up that is actually attached to the dress. This ties loosely at the front however the wearer wants it. The dress has a bias-cut column silhouette and falls gracefully to the ankle. It is lined with black crepe throughout, however the sleeves are not lined and are sheer. The only opening is the keyhole neckline at the rear so you need to be small enough to slip it on over your head. The dress is in very good antique condition, particularly for a garment of nearly 90 years of age. She is wearable with care and the following points to note: There are some rather charming patch repairs to the bottom of the hem, left sleeve and one on the body in various sizes. It was clearly a dearly loved dress and it's rather hard to spot them unless you go looking for them. They could be better sewn but I rather like them the way they are and so we left alone when we restored other parts of the dress - we photographed a few so you can see what we mean. The cuffs were very narrow so we have moved the poppers and this has left some small grazes to the fabric - minor. Wearable 1930s tea dresses...

1950s Mr John Couture Black Crepe Shift Dress and Jacket

1950s Mr John Couture Black Crepe Shift Dress and Jacket

Located in London, GB

This two-in-one little black dress and jacket is by Mr John, a celebrated American couturier and one of the foremost milliners of the 20th century; his most famous costume designs being those made for Vivien Leigh in "Gone with the Wind," Marlene Dietrich in "Shanghai Express," Greta Garbo in "The Painted Veil" and Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Among the fashionable women who wore his designs were the Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Swanson, Gloria Vanderbilt, Lauren Bacall and Joan Crawford. The New York Times review of his 1956 fall clothing and accessories collection was "a gifted designer and skilled workman who produces some of the most original, wearable, flattering fashions to be seen anywhere." This evening ensemble was designed in 1956-1959 and tailored to an elegant silhouette with a nipped-in waist and mid-calf length skirt. Thick straps give way to a square neckline trimmed with layers of silk faille. A silver-tone zip and a hook-and-eye clasp secure the gown at the rear and a slit at the bottom hem of the skirt allows for easy movement. The bolero jacket is attached to the dress with large crystal-adorned buttons at the front. It is trimmed with silk faille at the collar and waist. Two pleated tails fall from the rear waist down the length of the skirt, adding a hint of theatre and taking cues from menswear traditions, in particular classic morning jacket...
