About the Item

A dramatic documented piece from Julien Macdonald's Spring 2013 collection, this striking silk cape perfectly captures the sensual glamour that defined the season. Inspired by Sharon Stone's character in Basic Instinct, the collection combined sculptural body-conscious silhouettes with fluid, cinematic movement. The cape was styled over a high-cut bodysuit, where it billowed behind the model like a pair of ethereal butterfly wings. Expertly crafted from lightweight, semi-sheer silk crepe, the cape features beautifully graduated horizontal panels that fade from deep black into a soft peach-blush pink. The generous cut creates an elegant, enveloping silhouette, while the hem is subtly shaped to fall shorter at the front before sweeping dramatically to floor length at the back. Coordinating pale pink silk crepe ties fasten delicately at the neckline, and the cape is intentionally left unlined to preserve its fluidity and lightness. As the original archive piece, the cape remains in excellent vintage condition. The silk was hand-dyed during production, and there are a handful of extremely subtle, natural variations within the dye that are characteristic of the process rather than flaws. These are virtually imperceptible when worn and form part of the garment's authentic couture-quality finish. With sizing determined only by the adjustable neck ties, this versatile piece can be worn comfortably across sizes XXS to XXL, making it an adaptable garment that is equally suited to styling over eveningwear and body-con silhouettes. Note on the designer: Julien Macdonald OBE rose to prominence in the late 1990s. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he was hired by Karl Lagerfeld to work at Chanel, and was later appointed chief designer at Givenchy. In 1997, Macdonald launched his eponymous label and it was here that he cemented his reputation for high-octane, couture-level craftsmanship. He was named “British Fashion Designer of the Year” at the 2001 British Fashion Awards and, in 2006, he was awarded an OBE for services to fashion. Macdonald is known for his meticulous handwork, opulent fabrics, and body-sculpting silhouettes that marry traditional techniques with unabashed sensuality. His designs, often featuring intricate beading, feather work, and lacework, have made him a red carpet favourite and a key figure in modern fashion, celebrated for reviving the spectacle and decadence of haute couture in a contemporary context.
