About the Item

From the Spring/Summer 2000 collection that Rei Kawakubo described as "beautiful chaos", this purple-overdyed grey stretch knit short-sleeve pullover top, which is perceived as different shades from different angles, features an asymmetrical three-dimensional decorated hem with several shirred appliques including slashed organza that were dyed in complimentary cool colors. With unprecedented sculptural texture and irregular color blocking, this body of work was dominated by one-of-a-kind hand-cut-and-dyed floral-like multi-fabric ruffled and bunched appliques that were uniquely sewn to contrasting minimalist garments. In terms of fashion history, the collection was especially well-described initially by the Vogue reviewer in Fall 1999: "Rei Kawakubo's designs are normally unsettling at first, somewhat confusing and, ultimately, incomparably beautiful. What begins as an assault on the senses slowly reveals itself as the work of a true artistic genius--creating some of the most original pieces of the season. At the heart of the collection was a series of shirts and dresses with unexpected abundance of texture and color. Evoking exotic flowers or corals, Kawakubo piled yards of fabric into bundles of ruffles and pleats that dramatically redefined the silhouette. Flat surfaces suddenly blossomed into enormous volumes. Nothing old, nothing that has been done before--that's Comme des Garcons' mantra." For example on the Paris fashion-show runway, tops like ours were layered over a flowing bias-cut maxi salmon-color dress (see our runway photo herein and other listing) and mis-buttoned long-sleeve shirt to enable the bunched arrangement of sculptural wrinkles between the rumpled, displaced or misaligned pieces. For the serious collector interested in multiple CdG listings, we recommend pairing this listing as an overlay with our listing for a rare Spring/Summer 1997 "lumps and bumps" navy set, which includes a ruffled transparent net long-sleeve pullover and asymmetric-draping bias-cut stretch-jersey maxi skirt or tube dress. Our top's Japanese-size small will also suit a larger size given its T-shirt-like flexibility. If not worn as the sole bodice garment like in one of our photos of the FirstView fashion-show coverage, we recommend using oversized safetypins to style it over layers of clothing, as see in some their other coverage that we included for inspiration.

1997 arguably marked the pinnacle of Japanese Comme des Garcons founding designer Rei Kawakubo's collection debuts when she introduced deconstructed asymmetrical "lumps and bumps" padding and transparent tops that both deformed and revealed female bodies. For the Fall/Winter "Adult Punk" collection, she designed this transparent ecru organza pullover blouse, whose bodice and lower long sleeves are color-blocked with white textured silk-blend appliques and lined in white tulle that is hand-sheered above the outer hem. A recent Parisian exhibition at Musee de la Mode, "1997 Fashion...

For Comme des Garcons Spring/Summer 1997 iconic collection titled "Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body", which was nicknamed lumps-and-bumps, Rei Kawakubo designed this navy two-piece set of transparent pullover long-sleeve net tulle blouse and convertible translucent bias-cut draping long skirt or tube dress debuted on the runway in "Look 11" among the Vogue coverage (partly concealed under a navy open robe). Significantly, our pair repeats the fashion show's "Look 1" theme--which was interpreted by TheMet museum curators as "clothing-absence/body-presence"--with a see-through symmetrical top revealing breasts and a bias-cut draped asymmetrical skirt that clings to body curves. Variations of this silhouette were modeled in white, navy or red. Many had net-encased organ-shaped down pillows freely inserted into net underlays by the designer to shockingly distort the silhouettes with impossible feminine curves, such as with two kidney-shapes on the back or a tube across the front of the hips. This set will likewise accommodate such padding that is apparent in the Vogue photos...

Maison Martin Margiela Miss Deanna Trompe L'oeil Lurex Knit Pullover FW1999

Maison Martin Margiela Miss Deanna Trompe L'oeil Lurex Knit Pullover FW1999

By Maison Martin Margiela

Located in Chicago, IL

When Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela debuted gold Lurex knits while French luxury-goods Hermes Womenswear Artistic Director, simultaneously for Fall/Winter 1999, he introduced at his eponymous Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela a collection featuring 1970s-inspired Lurex-accented sweaters, along with oversized loose clothes intended for either women or men. Including a distinct printed tag stitched into a seam by Italian knitwear innovator Miss Deanna, who created many iconic knits under Margiela's artistic direction, this Margiela sparkly finely-knit long-sleeve pullover in a Lurex and viscose stretch blend is a minimalist unisex design with narrow ribbed trim at the crewneck, wrists and hem. Its "Made In Italy" size 44 with a 15.5-inch shoulder-line is without darts and drapes like a one-size-fits-most soft T-shirt. Presenting the optical illusion of a dark tube top and detached sleeves worn underneath, the lightweight sweater was knit from pale-gold, grey and blue yarns into a ombre pattern like a spray-painted gradient or dip-dyed fabric. Yet the additional glittery orange-tone metallic thread (difficult to photograph due to reflections) woven throughout proves that it was not painted or dyed, but an experimental complex knitwear manufacturing technique by Miss Deanna. While we have sold Lurex distorted sweaters by Miss Deanna from the F/W 1999 collection with matching label text formatting and a blank Margiela brand label, none of them included a conceptual trompe-l'oeil of another garment in reference to earlier collections, which suggests that this is among a Margiela-commissioned one-off comparable to her initial Artisanal knits. Later for Margiela's first diffusion collections, Miss Deanna mass-produced knits for Line 6, which were identified by the house's new brand label with a circled numeral among the Line numbers from 0 to 23. This more affordable Line evolved into MM6. Comparatively, Margiela's Fall 1999 Artisanale Line 0 collection, which was instead produced by his Parisian team, explored the textural effects of hand-painting fabrics, such as the unisex T-shirts that were striped or obscured with thick silver paint. Earlier in the 1990s, Margiela had reproduced some vintage...
