Origin: Portugal, mid-to-late 18th century Materials: Solid walnut, gilt and chiseled bronze Dimensions: Height 94 cm (37 in); Width 130 cm (51.2 in); Depth 70 cm (27.6 in) Description An exquisite mid-18th century Portuguese bombe commode, masterfully crafted from richly grained walnut, showcasing the elegance and exuberance typical of the Rococo period in Iberian design. This sculptural chest features a shaped and molded top, above a beautifully undulating front and sides (ilhargas), housing four bombe-shaped drawers with recessed panels. The lower apron is deeply carved and pierced with stylized acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and volutes, flowing into expressive “ball-and-claw” feet — a design element closely associated with high Portuguese furniture of the period. The drawers are adorned with original gilt bronze handles and escutcheons, finely chiseled and cast in high relief, presenting intricate Baroque and Rococo flourishes. The generous proportions, sinuous silhouette, and exceptional craftsmanship reflect the opulence of noble residences of the 18th century. This particular piece is documented as originating from a Portuguese manor house (solar), attesting to its provenance and historical context. Condition Very good antique condition with a warm patina consistent with age. Minor surface wear, typical of 18th-century walnut. All bronze fittings appear original and well preserved. Drawers function smoothly. Provenance From a noble Portuguese 18th-century solar (manor house), this commode exemplifies the refinement of Luso-Baroque furniture, blending ornamental vigor with technical finesse.
