About the Item

This finely detailed Mongolian Buddhist thangka presents a luminous devotional composition centered on the Medicine Buddha, rendered with exceptional clarity and jewel-like color. The seated blue figure of Bhaisajyaguru holds a healing bowl, surrounded by attendant Buddhas arranged in a harmonious mandala-like format, all set against a vibrant field of lotus blossoms and clouds. The precision of line work, symmetry, and the calm spiritual presence conveyed through the faces are hallmarks of accomplished monastery-trained painters working in the Tibetan-Mongolian tradition during the early 20th century. One of the finest smaller Mongolian Thangkas I have ever offered. You will not find a finer one of its type anywhere at any price. This has been part of my personal collection for 35 years and is being put up for sale for the first time. Purchased from a successful Mongolian businessman/collector who was selling off some of his treasures to fund his daughter’s tuition in business school in the United States in the 1990s. He had two small groups of pristine, superb Thangkas that he had obtained in the 1970s that were the pride of his collection from which this piece and several other superb small related pieces I obtained came from. The group was at a level above anything he had seen himself at any time since containing these 50 years ago. Mongolia opened up in the 1990s and many treasures came out of the country that had been hidden away by families during the Soviet occupation. There was a period of 10 or 15 years during which there was a lot of really good material on the market even during that time this peace stood out above other related pieces. Take time to look at the photos -the beauty of the colors, the quality and precision of the painting, and the animation and spiritual feeling of the piece are captivating. What distinguishes this example is its extraordinary state of preservation. The pigments remain remarkably bright and fresh, suggesting the painting was carefully stored for most of its life, likely protected within a gau shrine box or kept folded away from light and environmental exposure. Thangkas from Mongolia are often seen with significant darkening and wear due to climate and devotional use; finding one with colors this vivid and surfaces this clean is increasingly rare and highly desirable to collectors of Himalayan and Buddhist art. The thangka is professionally presented in a custom Wikipedia hand wrapped Thai silk mat with museum glass and an ornate gilt frame, allowing it to be immediately displayed in a refined interior setting while preserving it for generations to come. Its intimate scale and exquisite execution make it ideal for collectors seeking a museum-quality devotional image in a compact format.
