About the Item

With simplicity of form and a delicate glaze, this Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) jar for rice wine or spirits displays the quiet refinement of provincial Chinese ceramics. The earthenware form is cloaked in an ashen celadon glaze of cool, blue-grey tone, textured with firing imperfections and streaked with red-orange color from time spent buried in iron-rich soil. The jar is potted to a gently tapered form and textured with ridges at the shoulder like ripples in a pond. Described in ancient Chinese texts as the “moon dyed with spring water,” celadon vessels such as this are prized for their well-proportioned forms and luminous color. Minor losses to glaze.
