About the Item

An exquisite museum-quality contemporary porcelain vase, an exclusive signature work in brilliant blue by an acclaimed master of the Imari-Arita region, recognized for his exceptional application of gold and platinum on porcelain. in 2016, a rare institutional acknowledgment of a living artist working within a centuries-old art form. A full artist profile is available upon request. The vase centers on the ho-o, or phoenix, one of the most auspicious creatures in Japanese mythology, imagined as a bird of fire born from the sun itself, and traditionally understood to appear only in times of peace and virtuous rule. Long paired in Japanese and Chinese art with the dragon as a symbol of harmony between yin and yang, the ho-o here becomes the focal point of a dense mosaic of gold linework so fine that the surface takes on the dreamlike illusion of a transparent canvas, the bird seeming to hover just beneath the glaze rather than sit upon it. The base and neck extend the composition in a rich gradation of blues, set off by generous use of gold, a deliberate framing device that draws the eye inward toward the phoenix at the vase's center. On the reverse, the artist's signature is surrounded by a further intricate pattern in bright red and gold, a detail that rewards turning the piece to view in full. As with the artist's other signature work, the piece is executed in "fired-on gold": the polychrome overglaze is fired at roughly 800°C, after which gold and platinum are applied and fired again at a slightly lower temperature to preserve their luster, with a single piece undergoing as many as five to ten firings before completion. The vase comes in a custom wooden case (tomobako) signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12 in × D 7 in
