About the Item

A superb octagonal Kutani porcelain plate, hand-painted with three elegant white egrets standing among stylized bamboo and reed leaves against a softly shaded grey ground — a composition of poetic restraint framed by an elaborate border of geometric sayagata (key-fret) pattern in cobalt blue and white, interspersed with cartouches of gold kiku roundels, butterfly medallions, and naturalistic studies of berries and foliage. The piece bears a seal identifying it as Kutani ware, signed by the artist Junro (淳郎). Kutani ware, originating in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture in the 17th century and revived to great acclaim in the Meiji period, is celebrated above all for its bold, sophisticated color palette and the technical confidence of its overglaze enamel painting. This plate exemplifies the tradition at its finest: the central octagonal reserve is rendered with an almost painterly subtlety — the three egrets captured mid-gesture, one calling skyward with open beak, their soft grey-shaded ground evoking mist or water rather than the flat white grounds typical of much export Kutani, lending the central scene an unusual atmospheric depth. The egret (shirasagi), prized in Japanese art for its purity and grace, is here rendered with a naturalism that balances decorative formality with genuine ornithological observation. The surrounding octagonal border is a masterclass in Kutani's decorative vocabulary — the dense blue-and-white key-fret pattern providing a rigorous geometric counterpoint to the eight individual cartouches set into it, alternating between gilt floral medallions in warm ochre and naturalistic vignettes of grapes, acorns, and climbing vines rendered in soft polychrome enamels. The combination of disciplined pattern and passages of free, painterly decoration is characteristic of the finest late Meiji–Taisho Kutani production, when workshops competed to demonstrate both technical virtuosity and artistic sophistication for an increasingly discerning domestic and export market. The octagonal form itself, with its eight clean facets, is a hallmark of premium Kutani tableware of this period, requiring exceptional precision both in the porcelain's shaping and in the painter's ability to compose a unified design across its segmented border.
