🌸 Gilded Flights of Fancy: A Trio of Chinese Export Lacquer Trunks ________________________________________ This remarkable Set of Three Nested Chinese Export Trunks is a testament to the sophistication and continuity of the China Trade decorative arts at the turn of the 20th century. The imagery evokes the harmony of nature so central to Qing-era design, while the refined decorative hardware and carrying handles reflect the Western tastes of the export market around 1900. Medium: Papier-Mâché/Wood Composite, Ebonized Finish, Gilt and Polychrome Decoration. Origin: China (Export Ware). Period: Circa 1900. The graduated trunks are constructed using a light, flexible, and surprisingly durable papier-mâché or composite body—a practical choice for shipping and travel. They feature a striking, highly polished ebonized (black) ground that creates a dramatic backdrop for the hand-painted decoration. • Lustrous Decoration: The entire surface is richly adorned with fine gilt and polychrome painting. The lids and side panels contrast two classic Chinese motifs: o Lid Panels: Feature dynamic Bird and Flower (Huaniao) compositions, including vibrant peonies and birds in flight and repose. o Side Panels: Display captivating, stylized landscape scenes rendered in a vibrant palette of red, blue, and gold, appealing directly to the romanticized Western view of the Orient. • Hardware and Provenance: The pieces are finished with robust metal carrying handles and frontal latches. A Chinese retailer's stamp inside one cover provides an authentic link back to the export network. Dimensions • Large Trunk: 34 inches wide x 22 inches deep x 16 inches high. • Medium Trunk: 31 3/8 inches wide x19 1/2 inches deep x 14 inches high. • Small Trunk: 28 5/8 inches wide x 16 3/4 inches deep x 12 inches high. Condition: scratches on the top surface- see photo. Historical and Decorative Context This set represents the final flourish of a two-century-long tradition of Chinese artisans producing luxury goods for foreign merchants. These decorative pieces served as highly fashionable storage and accent furniture in homes, particularly during the Aesthetic and later Colonial Revival periods, when Oriental aesthetics were immensely popular. Wear consistent with age and use. Good with two scratches on top panel only. The photo shows them at their worst as the lights on my booth make it look a lot worse than it is.
