About the Item

This Edo-period makie suzuribako features the legendary Heian-period general Minamoto no Yoshiie, widely known as Yawata Tarō, shown charging forward on horseback with bow drawn. Celebrated as an ideal warrior and believed to be under the protection of the deity Hachiman, Yoshiie is one of the most iconic figures of early samurai history. The scene is executed in exquisite gold and silver makie, with a dynamic sense of movement in the horse’s posture and the flowing armor ribbons. The surface combines hira-makie, taka-makie, and finely applied powders to create depth, texture, and brilliance. The details of the helmet, lamellar armor, and reins are rendered with exceptional precision characteristic of high-quality Edo lacquer work. Inside, the box is finished in glowing nashiji and retains its full set of writing implements: inkstone, fan-shaped water dropper, paper knife, awl, and brush. The lid interior is decorated with a delicate scattering of cherry blossoms, adding an elegant poetic contrast to the powerful exterior imagery. As an antique Edo piece, light signs of use are present and are documented in the photographs. A refined example of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship and samurai iconography.
