About the Item

A handsome Japanese lacquer hibachi of rounded rectangular form, decorated in gold and silver makie with an elegant composition of autumn botanicals — including chrysanthemum, morning glory vine, and broad-leafed plants with berry clusters — rendered across the body in tones ranging from bright gold to softer silver-gold. The warm, naturalistic arrangement wraps around the vessel with the relaxed confidence characteristic of fine Meiji or Showa period lacquerwork. The matte brown/black ground, provides a refined contrast that allows the decoration to be highlighted. Retains its original metal liner. A functional and decorative object, the hibachi was traditionally used as a portable brazier for heating and warming hands — and today makes an equally distinguished planter, ice bucket, or simply a sculptural presence on a table or shelf.
