About the Item

A superb Japanese Wajima lacquer natsume tea caddy by acclaimed maki-e artist Kazunori Taniuchi (Shikō). Finely executed in traditional lacquer techniques, the caddy depicts the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove amongst an atmospheric bamboo landscape, with elegant gold decoration contrasting against the rich dark lacquer ground. Presented with its signed wooden storage box. Dimensions: 7.3cm H x 7.5cm diameter Condition: Lovely original condition. Born in 1956, Kazunori Taniuchi is an accomplished Japanese maki-e artist known for finely crafted Wajima lacquerware associated with the traditional tea ceremony. His natsume are particularly admired for their intricate decoration and use of classical Japanese and East Asian subjects. The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove were a group of third-century Chinese scholars and poets traditionally associated with retreat from political life in favour of nature, poetry, music and philosophical discussion. The subject later became highly influential in Japanese art, where it came to represent intellectual independence and freedom from convention. We ship tracked, worldwide.
