About the Item

A round lacquer box with intricate mother-of-pearl inlays. The central part of the lid is decorated with a peach branch, surrounded by a garland of peach branches enclosed within a border of stylized clouds. The lower part of the lid features auspicious symbols, flowers, and vegetal scrolls, which also decorate the lower part of the box. The central theme of the iconography of this lacquer box, the peach, holds significance in Chinese mythology, symbolizing longevity, immortality, and prosperity. A very similar box (No. 64.32a,b) dated to the Ming Dynasty is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
