About the Item

An exceptionally rare 18th-century Islamic pharmacy jar, likely originating from Syria or the broader Persianate metalworking tradition. Crafted in copper, the vessel is richly ornamented with turquoise enamel panels featuring elegant Arabic calligraphy, complemented by surviving traces of gilding or gold edging that enhance its decorative refinement. The rounded body is surmounted by a rolled rim with a shallow groove beneath the opening, a characteristic feature of early pharmacy and storage vessels once sealed with parchment or leather secured by cord. An arched basket-style swing handle completes the elegant silhouette, combining practical function with striking visual appeal. The vibrant turquoise enamel, calligraphic decoration and warm patinated copper exemplify the sophisticated craftsmanship of Islamic metalwork during the 18th century. Equally compelling as a historical object and a decorative work of art, the jar possesses remarkable presence and rarity. Condition: good decorative condition, with minor enamel losses, surface wear and patina consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details. A museum-worthy example of Islamic decorative arts, ideal for collectors of Arabic calligraphy, Persian and Syrian metalwork, and rare 18th-century apothecary vessels. We ship internationally, tracked and insured.
