About the Item

A hand-painted (nikuhitsu) shunga composition on silk, depicting an intimate scene in the tradition of Japanese "pillow pictures" (makura-e). Executed in the ukiyo-e style, the work reflects the genre's characteristic attention to pattern, textile detail, and fluid line work, rendered directly onto silk rather than as a woodblock print — a format historically reserved for private commissions and connoisseurship, as opposed to mass-produced shunga prints. Shunga painting flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868) and continued into the Meiji era, produced by both anonymous artisans and named ukiyo-e masters for private patrons. Unsigned works such as this were often produced for wealthy merchant or samurai clients and were kept as personal, rather than publicly displayed, possessions — a practice that accounts for the survival of relatively few examples in fine condition.
