About the Item

Charming Japanese 20th century Showa period four-panel folding byobu screen depicting a fruiting persimmon branch over a dramatic gilt silk ground. The painting is executed in the Nihonga school style rendered in a Rimpa School inspired manner. The painting is signed with a seal by the artist "Shunko" on the bottom right corner. The suspended vine or branch has a light dusting of snow symbolizing rustic beauty, longevity, and the transition from autumn to winter in the Japanese culture. The gilt background has a natural silk texture accented with white echoing the light snow. The painting is mounted to a natural cedar wood frame with a delicate gold silk brocade border. The frame has solid joinery and construction in exceptional, well preserved condition as seen in photos. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
