About the Item

A striking Japanese two-panel folding screen (byōbu) from the Meiji period (1868–1912), entirely covered in silver leaf. Remarkable for its restrained, minimalist aesthetic, the screen is devoid of painted decoration, allowing the silver-leaf surface itself to become the composition. Over time, the silver has naturally oxidized and developed a richly varied patina, ranging from luminous silvery tones to deeper grey and subtly warm areas. The visible seams of the individually applied silver-leaf squares, together with areas of rubbing, oxidation and age-related surface variation, create an almost abstract appearance that changes subtly according to the surrounding light and viewing angle. The simplicity of the composition gives the screen a distinctly architectural quality, making it particularly suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. It may be displayed as a freestanding folding screen or appreciated as a large-scale decorative work of Japanese art. Period: Meiji period (1868–1912) Materials: Silver leaf, paper, wood Dimensions: H 174 cm × W 175 cm (68.5 × 69 in.) Condition: Good antique condition with age-related patination, oxidation, rubbing, scratches and surface wear to the silver leaf. There is a small area of loss to the wooden frame, as shown in the photographs. The screen remains structurally sound and displays beautifully. Wear consistent with age and use.
