About the Item

A refined Japanese two-panel folding screen (byōbu), painted on silk with an elegant composition of bamboo, chrysanthemums and flowering plum against a warm gold-toned ground. Tall green bamboo anchors the left side of the composition, accompanied by a richly layered group of chrysanthemums in softly varied shades of white, pink, yellow and deep red. The flowers are rendered with careful attention to individual petals and foliage, contrasting with the freer, more fluid brushwork of the bamboo leaves. Across the upper portion of the screen, branches of flowering plum extend gracefully into the open ground. Their dark, expressive lines and delicate white blossoms create a restrained counterpoint to the denser arrangement of flowers below. A boldly painted rock formation occupies the center, while orchids and slender leaves emerge along the lower right, bringing a quieter rhythm to the composition. The warm gold-toned silk ground gives the painting depth and visual continuity, while allowing the varied botanical forms and subtle colors to remain clearly defined. The balance between detailed floral painting, expressive brushwork and generous open space gives the screen an elegant and distinctly Japanese decorative presence.
