About the Item

A striking mid-20th-century Tibetan Buddhist thangka depicting Samantabhadra in sacred union with his consort Samantabhadri, stated to have been found at Shechen Monastery in Tibet. Entirely hand-painted on canvas using traditional rock and mineral pigments, the composition presents the primordial Buddha Samantabhadra in deep blue, embracing the white-bodied Samantabhadri while seated in meditation upon an elaborate multicoloured lotus throne. In Tibetan Buddhist iconography, this yab-yum representation symbolizes the inseparable union of fundamental spiritual principles. Samantabhadra represents primordial awareness, while Samantabhadri is associated with wisdom and emptiness; their union expresses the non-dual nature of the enlightened state. The simplicity of the central figures is dramatically contrasted by the richly ornamented setting. A luminous pink and gold aureole surrounds the couple, framed by abundant peonies and foliage. Below, a highly stylized landscape of mountains and turbulent blue water incorporates a dragon and ritual offerings, giving the composition considerable movement and visual depth. Particularly attractive is the painting's unusually vivid palette of deep cobalt blue, ivory white, pink, orange, turquoise and green, with precisely delineated floral and landscape details characteristic of traditional Himalayan devotional painting. Thangkas of this type traditionally functioned as aids to meditation, visualization and Buddhist ritual as well as sacred devotional images. With its bold central imagery and exceptionally decorative surroundings, this example also has a powerful presence as a work of Tibetan religious art.
