Title: Monumental Chinoiserie Lacquered 4-Panel Folding Screen, Circa 1920-1950 Description: A Striking Chinoiserie Coromandel-Style Folding Screen Presenting a magnificent four-panel folding screen, a masterful example of 20th-century Chinoiserie craftsmanship, circa 1920-1950. This statement piece is rendered in high-gloss black lacquer with a rich, luminous gold ground, featuring elaborately hand-painted and relief-carved courtly scenes. The Artistry The screen unfolds to reveal a continuous, immersive narrative of a refined Chinese imperial court. Figures in traditional robes are depicted in various states of leisure and ceremony: seated around low tables with tea wares, attending to musical instruments, and being attended by court officials with ceremonial fans. A central bronze censer emitting wisps of smoke anchors the composition. The scenes are bordered by intricately painted prunus and pine trees, symbols of perseverance and longevity, all framed within a bold geometric key-fret border in cinnabar red. The use of a gold ground and raised relief detailing gives the screen a remarkable depth and presence, a technique synonymous with export pieces made for the Western market during the Art Deco and Mid-Century periods. Construction & Condition Composed of four hinged panels, the screen stands on shaped feet and is designed to be self-supporting. It is in good original condition, with a beautiful, aged patina to the lacquer surface consistent with its age. Minor losses on the edges and one hinge replaced. Dimensions & Placement This screen is of a commanding scale, ideal for use as a room divider, a dramatic headboard, or a piece of wall art in a grand entryway. Its black, red, and gold palette makes it highly versatile, complementing both Classical and contemporary interiors.
