About the Item

A 19th century impression of a woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III. The preint depicts the Kabuki actor Sawamura Tossho as Watanabe no Wataru and is the left print of an original diptych. The actor's name and role are printed above his right shoulder. The artist's "Gotetei Kunisada ga" signature is printed in-block alongside a kiwame censor seal and a Fujioka-ya Hikotaro publisher's seal. The piece is matted in white and frame din a thin gold toned metal frame. Condition details: Extensive fading, light staining, and damage apparent in the lower left corner.

A stunning framed antique children’s Kimono. Made of silk with a white motif of leaf shapes and pheasants are present against a red background. Kimono is securely fastened to Fabric backing. The uchikake is an outer robe worn over a traditional kimono and obi, with an outer belt. Red and white are common base colors for this style, with red symbolizing auspiciousness and warding off evil spirits. This style was adopted as a ceremonial garment by the wealthy merchant class during the Edo period (1603-1868) and became a mainstream costume in modern times. Made in Japan circa 20th Century.
