About the Item

Among the many esteemed objects of the traditional Chinese scholar’s studio was the scroll pot, a large container for storing one's collection of landscape paintings, poetry and works of calligraphy. Especially popular were scroll pots shaped from natural burlwood or carved to resemble a gnarled tree trunk. This antique scroll pot from the early 19th century is one such example, formed from a hollowed cross-section of burled elmwood (yumu). A pattern of knots and twists adds texture to the exterior and the exposed wood grain flows with turbulent movement. Left unfinished to celebrate the organic beauty of raw wood, the scroll pot is softened by a light patina developed over years of use.
