About the Item

Designer's Note: This exquisite, petite inkstone box is a perfect harmony of practical literati utility and profound aesthetic elegance. Its compact size and dense, smooth texture make it an exceptional "cabinet of curiosities" piece or a luxurious, culturally rich desk accessory for a modern study. The Story & Symbolism: The box is rich with scholarly symbolism. The finely carved lid depicts an ao fish (a mythological sea creature) and cranes soaring skyward. In classical Chinese culture, this imagery represents the ultimate auspicious wish of "passing the imperial exams with highest honors," a timeless metaphor for profound career success, intellect, and prestige. Upon opening the box, the smooth and dense inkstone surface is framed by elegantly flowing cloud patterns. These clouds symbolize the mind of the scholar, where brilliant ideas and inspiration rise effortlessly like clouds in the sky. About the Artist & Material: The Artist: Yu Min Wu is a highly celebrated inkstone master with over twenty years of experience. Recognized officially as a National Inkstone Carver in 2016, his work is acclaimed for balancing meticulous, microscopic detail with bold expressive vitality. The Expertise: While Wu is renowned as a master of Duan inkstones—often working with the highly coveted, riverbed-sourced Laokeng stone known for its jade-like hydration and rare inclusions like "ice lines" or "fish-brain crystal"—this particular piece showcases his versatility. Here, he applies his elite carving techniques to Guizhou Zipaoyu Stone, honoring the stone's natural qualities and transforming it into a masterpiece of refined craftsmanship.
