About the Item

This charming solid cast silver Buddha dates to the 17th to 18th century and is a fine example of Cambodian devotional metalwork in miniature form. The figure is seated in meditation with a gentle, expressive smile and elongated features characteristic of regional style. What distinguishes this piece is the beautifully incised decoration across the robe, where repeating geometric motifs add visual richness and careful hand detail to the otherwise simple form. The surface shows the soft wear and mellow character expected of an object that has been handled and venerated over centuries. Despite its small size, the sculpture has a strong presence and personality. The casting is confident and the proportions are pleasing, giving the piece a quiet elegance that is often missing in later examples. A special and appealing early silver Buddha that combines age, craftsmanship, and devotional character in a compact and collectible form.. i’ve had a number of these miniature or near miniature Cambodian 17/18thC silver Buddha, some solid, others hollow cast. Some of them follow traditional convention for sculpting Buddhas during that time., others are more creative and or provincial in style. This is one of the latter-many things about it, from the shape, to the face and especially to the design work on the environment is very distinctive. It comes from a large collection of miniature and near miniature 1718 century Cambodian, silver Buddhas that was put together over several decades. I was fortunate enough to purchase close to a dozen of them over a period of time from the collector, who graduallysold their collection as they moved into retirement it was more wonderful than the last, and this was one of the best of lot. Some of them including this one have influence from Laos.
