About the Item

Rare Late Pyu to Early Pagan Burmese Bronze Monk, Solid Cast, Circa 9th–11th Century This delightful and exceptionally rare solid-cast Burmese bronze monk dates to the late Pyu to early Pagan period, one of the most formative and least-surviving eras of Southeast Asian Buddhist art. Despite its intimate scale, this sculpture possesses remarkable spiritual presence and sculptural confidence, qualities that define early Burmese bronze casting at its best. The monk is shown seated in quiet devotion, legs folded atop a finely articulated beaded lotus pedestal, with hands held in anjali mudra, the gesture of prayer and reverence. His face is gentle and contemplative, with softly modeled features that convey humility, warmth, and meditative focus. The figure is solid cast, giving it a pleasing weight and integrity that distinguishes it from later hollow examples. The surface displays an authentic, naturally aged patina with subtle variations in tone, consistent with centuries of ritual handling and devotional use. Traces of mineral accretion and wear further reinforce its early origin. Bronzes from this transitional Pyu–Pagan period are exceedingly scarce, particularly in such complete and expressive condition. Mounted on a discreet custom modern stand for secure display, this rare early Burmese bronze would be a standout addition to any serious collection of Southeast Asian, Buddhist, or early bronze sculpture.
