About the Item

The works of Hideaki Hanano are created through the encounter between traditional lacquer techniques and Japanese antiques. After years of training in Wajima, a region renowned for lacquerware production, he is now based in Kanazawa, where he continues his practice. This piece is made by applying lacquer to Japanese antiques collected by Koichi Nishizaka. The process begins with the careful purification of raw lacquer, a time-intensive stage that forms the foundation of the work. To build depth and thickness, layers are repeatedly applied and dried, allowing the passage of time itself to accumulate within the surface. Material memory and the artist’s hand quietly converge in each piece. Each form is structurally independent, capable of standing on its own or being arranged in multiple configurations. Their placement creates shifting relationships and spatial rhythms, offering new visual experiences within the surrounding environment. These works embody a quiet presence, where the time held within antique objects meets the time embedded in lacquer.
