About the Item

Remarkable 17thC or earlier Tibetan Buddhist Portrait Statue of a Monk in copper. I recently came across the same historical figure in a high-end auction catalogue in the same size. This one not only compared favorably, but I was even better on this one Sits a little unevenly on the base- otherwise near perfect, with most of the original (high quality) gilding intact. This piece measures 4 inches tall and 5.25 inches on its custom modern base. He is holding a finely worked incense burner in one hand and a fly whisk in the other. Most amazing feature of this statue is his wizened old face-with head cocked slightly to one side- he is at once kind and alert, with a joyful twinkle in his eye- as distinctive and special as any monk I have offered. I would love to have known him. Sitting on this kind of cushion, it may be a lifetime portrait.

13thC Burmese Buddha Pagan Buddha with Ava Influence. Formidable, Charismatic

13thC Burmese Buddha Pagan Buddha with Ava Influence. Formidable, Charismatic

Located in Ukiah, CA

This striking 13th-century Burmese standing bronze Buddha represents a powerful late Pagan-period sculpture infused with early Ava stylistic influences. Thickly cast and commanding in presence, the figure exemplifies the transition between two important phases of Burmese Buddhist art, combining the solidity of Pagan aesthetics with emerging Ava refinement. In person, the sculpture conveys remarkable visual and physical weight, underscoring the confidence and mastery of its casting. The most extraordinary feature of this Buddha is the treatment of the robe. The rippling folds, derived from sculptural traditions reaching back to the first millennium, were executed using an exceptionally rare and labor-intensive technique. Rather than being incised or molded as part of the original casting, each individual ripple was separately applied atop the robe surface. This method is known from a very small number of early bronzes but is virtually unheard of on a large-scale standing Pagan Buddha...
