About the Item

A well cast smaller scale bronze reproduction of the famous golden Buddha known as Para Puttha Chinnarat, housed at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, mid 20th century, Thailand. A faithfully cast reproduction of the renowned Thai seated Buddha known as the Chinnarat Buddha, or more formally, Phra Phuttha Chinnarat. The original is a 14th century monumental gold covered bronze Buddha from the Sukhothai Kingdom, and is housed at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. It is considered the most beautiful Buddha in Thailand. The striking sculpture represents the historical Buddha seated upon a lotus pedestal surmounting a large and ornate stepped base. The Buddha is portrayed in maravijaya (the Victory over Mara), with legs crossed in the half lotus position, hands performing bhumisparsha mudra. One hand held in the lap in meditation, while the other is draped elegantly over the knee, reaching down to touch the earth. It represents the moment the Buddha reaches enlightenment. On either side are wrathful protectors, dharampalas, one holding a sword, the other with arms raised above his head. Behind the Buddha is a striking and iconic flaming mandorla. Naga heads emerge from the ends of the halo, flanking the Buddha. The Buddha is well proportioned, with a robust body and elegant lines. He wears a monastic robe in typical fashion, leaving one shoulder bare, the trailing hem draped over the covered shoulder. His face is serene, looking into the middle ground through heavily lidded and downcast almond shaped eyes. His hair arranged in the traditional neat rows of curls. The low ushinisha is topped with a tall flame finial. The back of the base with two casting marks. In two parts, the halo removable.
