14th/15thC Pair of Yuan–Early Ming Cast-Iron Buddha with Original Mandorlas

Located in Ukiah, CA

An exceptionally rare matched near-identical pair of early Chinese cast-iron Buddha figures, dating to the Yuan dynasty or early Ming period (14th–15th century), each cast with an integral mandorla—a survival that is itself highly uncommon. While a single example of this type is scarce, a matched pair displaying different hand mudras may be unique among known surviving examples. Each Buddha is shown seated in meditation on a tiered lotus base, framed by a sharply arched mandorla carved with radiating, flame-like ridges that emphasize spiritual energy and transcendence. The figures retain a deeply textured, naturally developed patina, consistent with centuries of age and devotional exposure, imparting a strong archaeological and historical presence. Subtle traces of mineral accretion and wear confirm their authenticity and early casting. A nearly identical cast-iron Buddha—sharing the same mudra as one of the present figures—was published in Sotheby’s Art of the Buddha (September 22, 2005, p. 94), firmly establishing the rarity and importance of this sculptural form. The existence of two closely related figures suggests the original presence of a small devotional grouping or triad, representing differing spiritual states or aspects of the Buddha. Early Chinese cast-iron Buddhist sculptures with intact mandorlas are rare; matched examples are extraordinarily so. This pair represents a highly important acquisition for collectors of Yuan–Ming Buddhist metalwork, early Chinese sculpture, or museum-caliber devotional art. I purchased these two almost 15 years apart, one from an old family collection and the other from a reputable auction house. I researched one for many years before I found the closely related example. In the Sotheby’s auction catalogue.. I knew immediately what the other one was when I came across it after having done so much to educate myself about the first one. Note: Only one photograph shows both Buddhas together; additional images depict the figures individually.. You are looking at purchasing TWO Yuan-Early Ming Buddhas...
