Constructed of a solid brass frame cast in parts and embossed with acanthus leaves. The central fender is flanked by stepped pedestals topped by solid brass lions connected by a central bar, also of solid brass. The overall design is neo-classical and dates to the Napoleon III period of the mid-to-late 19th Century. The piece appears to have been cleaned regularly, with only modest amounts of soot accumulating in the center directly in front of the firebox.
