About the Item

Rare 19th century cast iron Native American Andirons, circa 1880, thought to be an image of the Wampanoag Sachem Massasoit (1581 - 1661), early friend and protector of the nestling Plymouth Colony. The cast iron figure is that of a man wearing a tunic with sash, leggings and moccasins, with feathered plume atop braided hair, holding a tomahawk. These andirons were made by the Plymouth Foundry (in Plymouth, MA) circa 1880, sparked by the reborn interest generated by the nation's Centennial celebrations. An identical pair recently sold at auction for $5520. The andirons remain in very good condition and clearly show the patina of use and age. Measures: 19 in H x 6 in Wide x 18-3/4 in deep.
