About the Item

A fine Louis XVI Statuario marble and ormolu mounted fireplace, French, c.1785-1790, the central plaque attributed to the eminent Parisienne bronzier, Etienne Martincourt, the moulded rectangular shelf above panelled frieze centred by a bronze bas-relief depicting an Allegory of Astronomy, this flanked by scrolled brackets, the jambs formed of disconnected fluted Ionic columns headed by Scamozzi capitals hung with gilt-bronze foliate swags, the opening framed with broad ingrounds with egg and dart and ribbon-bound reeded mouldings. Restored. Initial research on the central bronze plaque uncovered an identical example held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (object number 07.225.510.416) which they believe to be by François Rémond, after a design by François-Aimé Damerat (ca. 1785–90). Similar bas-relief plaques supplied by Rémond can be found on the works of famed German-born Paris based cabinetmakers David Roentgen and Jean Henri Riesener but the attribution of its sculpting and chasing seems likely to be to either François-Aimé Damerat or Étienne Martincourt. A compelling connection to Martincourt can be made by comparing the current example to that on one of Riesener’s greatest masterpieces, the Jewel Cabinet made in 1787 for the Comtesse de Provence’s bedroom at Versailles (the bronzes now thought to be by Martincourt). It was later sold at sale of George Watson-Taylor in 1825 to George IV for use at Windsor Castle, where the cabinet remains until this day (Royal Collection inventory number, RCIN 31207). Closer inspection of bas-relief plaques by both Rémond and Martincourt has led LASSCO to believe that the example found on our chimneypiece to be by the latter. François Rémond (1747–1812) was one of the most revered French bronze-makers of the late eighteenth century. His work remains celebrated and is held in many of the finest global collections of Continental Decorative Arts. By 1774 he held the title of ‘Master Gilder’ and was supplying works to the best dealer-decorators (known in France as marchand-merciers) and ébénistes of the day, his mounts being included on pieces sold to Queen Marie-Antoinette and Empress Catherine II of Russia. Here in London his work was included on many pieces of furniture and indeed the chimneypieces of Carlton House, supplied by Dominique Daguerre for the architect Henry Holland (1745-1806) who famously oversaw the redecoration for the Prince of Wales in 1780s, in the contemporary Louis XVI style of the day (other pieces supplied for this job include eight large gilt-bronze candelabra and eagle-form chenets). Thomas Carter the Younger is also known to have worked on the chimneypieces for Carlton House and it is plausible that these surrounds, subsequently distributed after the property was demolished in 1826 to other Royal residencies such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, were a collaborative project with Rémond. For further reading on the topic see Furniture History, 2007, ‘Francois Rémond and Chimneypieces for Carlton House, 1787-1790’, Charles Baulez, and ‘Riesener and the Damerat brothers: an alliance of exceptional craftsmen’, Charles Baulez, and ‘François Rémond, a virtuoso of gilded bronze with a prolific career’ by the same author, both found at actu-culture, online.
