About the Item

Imposing Renaissance-style fireplace in richly carved walnut, featuring monumental architectural proportions and an exceptionally sculptural decorative program. The fireplace is supported by substantial jambs partially concealed behind two finely carved busts of bearded Atlantes, whose powerful figures serve as architectural supports. The lintel is richly decorated with flowers set within carved panels, together with a frieze bearing a Latin inscription, which can be read from both the front and the side: “Corona serum, Hic lares hic quies hic veterum memoriae, filii filiorum” The inscription evokes the themes of family continuity, the ancestral home, and the remembrance of generations past, adding a particularly evocative historical dimension to the piece. The impressive overmantel is more restrained in its ornamentation, allowing the carved family coat of arms to take center stage. The heraldic crest features clover motifs and a bear’s claw, surmounted by a finely carved helmet. Although inspired by Renaissance architecture and decorative arts, this fireplace dates to the 19th century, reflecting the period’s fascination with historicist and Renaissance Revival design. The deeply carved walnut has a rich, dark patina that enhances the architectural relief and sculptural details. Condition: Good overall antique condition, with some chips and losses, age-related cracks and surface scratches consistent with age.
