About the Item

An antique Victorian Grey St Anne Marble Corbel Fireplace Surround. The rectangular shelf with lamb’s tongue moulding to its edge sits above a plain frieze with well-carved corbels to each side. The jambs with single bead-mould to each side. English c.1850. A fine Victorian fireplace surround of generous scale, with crisp, well-preserved detailing characteristic of the period. The stepped jambs create a stronger architectural profile, allowing the surround to sit comfortably within larger reception rooms, drawing rooms or dining rooms. Sainte-Anne des Pyrénées is a fragmented grey marble used extensively throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century for furniture (table tops for commodes, tables etc) and fireplaces in both France and England. It is quarried from the marble basin of Arudy where stone is excavated to this day. All our fireplaces are prepared and restored in our workshops to the very best standards and are ready for installation and use.
