About the Item

A striking Michael Taylor Montecito-style lounge chair and matching ottoman, circa 1985, combining the relaxed luxury of California indoor-outdoor living with strong Neoclassical architectural detailing. Acquired from a Beverly Hills, California estate, this substantial two-piece seating set has the sculptural presence, generous proportions and deep comfort associated with sophisticated West Coast garden furniture of the period. The chair and ottoman are constructed from solid cast aluminum, making them suitable for covered outdoor, patio, garden, poolside or conservatory use. Both frames have a handsome dark oiled bronze-tone finish that gives the metalwork depth and an elegant aged appearance while allowing the cast decorative details to remain clearly visible. The lounge chair features a gracefully bowed back and sides, framed by slender vertical supports and substantial corner posts. Ribbed ball-form finials crown the posts, while cast acanthus-leaf motifs introduce a distinctly Neoclassical influence. The combination of classical ornament and open metal construction creates an airy silhouette despite the chair's generous scale. Deep, loose cushions soften the architectural frame. The oversized seat, back and side cushions are filled with foam for comfortable lounging and upholstered in an ivory-colored, mildew-resistant all-weather fabric. Attachment tabs help keep the cushions properly positioned. Although designed with outdoor-compatible materials, we recommend storing or covering the cushions during prolonged rain or inclement weather to preserve their appearance. The matching ottoman repeats the chair's dark bronze-tone aluminum construction and decorative finials, creating a cohesive ensemble. At 34 inches square, it is generously proportioned and can function as a traditional footrest or as an additional relaxed seating surface when required. This set recalls the celebrated Montecito aesthetic associated with Michael Taylor, whose California design vocabulary helped establish the luxurious indoor-outdoor style that remains highly desirable today. This example is not represented as being manufactured or designed by Michael Taylor; rather, it is described as being in his style and manner and was produced by a Los Angeles-area foundry. The lounge chair measures 30 in H × 30 in W × 30 in D, with a seat height of approximately 17 inches with the cushion. The metal frame measures approximately 28.5 inches high, reaching 30 inches at the finials. The matching ottoman measures 34 in W × 34 in D × approximately 17 in H with cushion. Presented in good vintage condition with expected cosmetic wear to the bronze-tone finish consistent with age and use.
