An exquisite specimen quality chrysanthemum viewing stone of extraordinary beauty revealed by master artisan Chenjiwa and measuring a large-scale 13" high and 11" wide including hand-carved rosewood base. It is signed. These large, natural and one-of-a-kind dark stone matrix Yonghe with artistically carved and polished surfaces occasionally reveal a superb large natural chrysanthemum crystal "cluster" such as this wonderful example. These are unique appreciation or viewing stones consisting of spherical rosette Formations of white crystals contained in celestite. They are heralded as one of the most important natural resources and collectible treasures in all of China. Since the 18th century when the Qian Long emperor received them as royal tribute, fine monumental chrysanthemum stones have been considered great aesthetic treasures and coveted by westerners since their stunning unveiling during the Panama Pacific International Exhibition in 1915. These stones were relatively unknown mineralogically until the 1980s. Today, high quality specimen sculptures such as this superb example are widely sought after. Only the most talented master artisans, such as Chenjiwa (photographed below with another of our natural crystal treasures offered elsewhere) are able to “read” the skin of the rough stone and reveal the delicate petals of the chrysanthemum flower, unveiling it's extraordinary hidden beauty through meticulous efforts. China, a fine archaic male effigy hand carved from a granular medium to dark gray stone. Neolithic period, Hongshan culture (circa 4700-2900 BC) Likely a fertility fetish. Note the pecked surfaces and the stone carved hair line top knot. Quality: Fine original condition, no repairs, as collected. Dark varied patina from appropriate age. Dimensions: 13.5 inches tall and 6 inches width. About Hongshan Culture: The Hongshan culture was a Neolithic culture in northeastern China. Hongshan sites have been found in an area stretching from Inner Mongolia to Liaoning, and dated from about 4700-2900 BC. The culture is named after Hongshanhou, a site in Hongshan District, Chifeng. The Hongshanhou site was discovered by the Japanese archaeologist Torii Ryuzo in 1908 and extensively excavated in 1935 by Kosaku Hamada and Mizuno Seiichi.
