About the Item

An exceptional pair of antique French carved and painted pedestals, richly decorated with grapevines, foliage, fruit clusters, and sculpted birds. Crafted in France circa 1750, each tall architectural stand is hand-carved in wood and designed with a square plinth base, a spiraling central shaft, and a broad square top suitable for displaying a bust, sculpture, urn, or planter. The twisted columns are especially decorative, with dark carved vines winding around the shafts amid raised green leaves and clusters of grapes. A blue-painted bird appears prominently on each pedestal, perched among the vine decoration and giving the pair a distinctive, almost whimsical character. The upper and lower sections are further enriched with bold acanthus-leaf carving, molded collars, and carved rope-twist borders. The original-style polychrome finish combines warm ochre and cream tones with deep brown, green, and blue accents. Areas of rubbing, surface wear, and exposed wood contribute to the beautifully aged patina and emphasize the depth of the hand carving. The square bases feature large radiating foliate motifs in relief, providing both visual weight and architectural presence. With their grape-and-vine imagery, these substantial 18th-century pedestals would be especially appropriate in a wine cellar or tasting room, while their sculptural scale also makes them striking accents in an entry, library, gallery, or living room. The pair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a richly time-worn painted surface and strong decorative presence. Dimensions: 67" H each.
