About the Item

This stone Buddha is thought to depict Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha). The stone is granite, and the piece is believed to have been carved sometime between the late 15th and late 16th centuries, during Japan's Muromachi period — a period considerably older than the Edo-period stone Buddhas more commonly seen. By the Edo period, stone Buddhas came to be carved with more realistic, three-dimensional detail, and decorative expression became increasingly refined. Stone Buddhas carved before that time, however, tend to be far more rustic, with forms that are somewhat abstract. This is thought to reflect the fact that such pieces were carved not to be shown or displayed, but purely as an act of prayer and religious devotion. Alongside gravestones and gorinto (five-tiered stone stupas), stone Buddhas like this one were carved regularly at temples as part of memorial rites. This sets them apart in direction from the more decoratively elaborate stone Buddhas of the Edo period onward, which were carved with more awareness of being seen and displayed. Stone Buddhas with this kind of rustic, abstract expression rarely appear in the Japanese market, and the vast majority of surviving pieces date from the Edo period. Every so often, however, a piece believed to have been carved during the Muromachi period turns up, and this is one such example. Compared to the more realistic Buddha figures of the Edo period, pieces from the Muromachi period like this one are, somewhat surprisingly, quite rare, and the chance to come across one is fairly limited. Because of its abstract form, this piece does not immediately read as a Buddhist statue at first glance. Look closely, however, and a faint air of Japanese Buddhist sculpture lingers about it, though the stronger impression is that of a stone sculptural object in its own right. This makes it easy to bring into an interior space, and it is equally well suited to placement in a garden for those who prefer a quietly understated stone Buddha rather than one that draws too much attention. We would especially recommend this piece to anyone who feels they have seen enough of the more decorative Edo-period Buddha figures.
