About the Item

This graceful bamboo basket is an early 20th century flower basket (hanakago) designed especially for ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement. Masterfully woven from thin strips of smoked bamboo (susutake), the basket is highly textured and full of movement, the weft interlaced with twists and turns that recall the untamed beauty of nature. A thin handle arches high above the vase-form basket, finished with a simple twisted lashing that matches the base. Used to contrast and anchor delicate flowers, this ikebana basket is a beautiful example of a traditional Japanese art form. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Opening: 4"
