About the Item

Bronze cup Barbedienne Bronze gilt stripper Barbedienne Foundry Excellent condition with no restorations Origin France Circa 1940 Napoleon III style Founded by former Parisian wallpaper merchant Ferdinand Barbedienne and engineer Achille Collas, one of the most revered foundries in 19th-century France began with the invention of a revolutionary device in the 1830s that could produce proportional reproductions—large or small—of sculptures. Collas' machine, which produced miniatures of antiques for home interiors around the world, was instrumental in the success of the F. Barbedienne Foundry. The successful company garnered prestigious awards and critical acclaim and created exquisite bronze chandeliers, clocks, and lamps for a host of wealthy and prominent clients. The duo launched their company under the name Société Collas et Barbedienne, and from the start they optimised the chemical processes for pigmenting and patinating their bronze statuettes. After Collas' death in 1859, Barbedienne continued alone, and the company name became simply F. Barbedienne. Barbedienne now employed over 300 workers, and the House created a range of furniture and decorative objects that incorporated marble and ormolu. However, with the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the foundry was forced to retool its moulds, and the production of cannons replaced that of sculptures, furniture and vases.
