About the Item

A striking mid-century modern art glass bowl by Flygfors Sweden, designed by Wiktor Berndt, with an expressive facial relief in rich amber-toned glass. This exceptional piece was created at Flygfors Glasbruk in 1962 and is attributed to the celebrated Swedish designer Wiktor Berndt, known for his bold, artistic approach to glassmaking. The bowl displays a deeply sculptural form, with a stylized human face pressed into the surface—an artistic signature of Berndt’s work during this period. The warm brown-amber hue enhances the depth and character of the molded features, while the subtle translucency gives the piece a glowing presence in light. Executed in heavy art glass, the bowl rests on a distinctive circular foot ring, adding both stability and a refined architectural element to the design. The rim is delicately punctuated with small rounded impressions, contributing to its handcrafted aesthetic and tactile appeal. The underside retains its original “Flygfors” marking along with the “Berndt” signature on the base ring, confirming authenticity and origin. This piece exemplifies the innovative spirit of Scandinavian modern design in the early 1960s, where functional objects were elevated into expressive works of art. A highly decorative and collectible object, ideal as a centerpiece or sculptural accent. DETAILS Designer: Wiktor Berndt Manufacturer: Flygfors, Sweden Year: 1962 Material: Brown-tinted art glass Signature: Marked “Flygfors” with “Berndt” on base Dimensions: Height 15 cm; Diameter 20.7 cm; Base ring diameter 5.5 cm ABOUT THE DESIGNER Wiktor Berndt (1919–1998) was a Swedish designer known for his distinctive contributions to mid-century Scandinavian glass. Born in Madesjö parish, Berndt initially studied graphic art and drawing, which strongly influenced his later work in glass design. In 1956, he joined Flygfors (Flygsfors Glasbruk in Orrefors), where he remained until 1975. During this period, Berndt played a significant role in shaping the artistic direction of the company, creating bold and expressive designs that stood out within Swedish modernism. His work is especially recognized for its sculptural qualities and imaginative use of form. In the 1960s, Berndt also designed lighting fixtures that became highly fashionable, characterized by vivid glass colors combined with metal elements—reflecting the era’s experimentation with materials and modern aesthetics. He later continued his career at Orrefors Glassworks until 1979. Today, Berndt’s designs are appreciated for their originality and remain sought after by collectors of Scandinavian art glass.
